Technician

Technicians will often be asked these tasks:
- Providing documentation, detailed instructions, drawings, or specifications to tell others about how devices, parts, equipment, or structures are to be fabricated, constructed, assembled, modified, maintained, or used.
- Using computers and computer systems (including hardware and software) to program, write software, set up functions, enter data, or process information.
- Servicing, repairing, calibrating, regulating, fine-tuning, or testing machines, devices, and equipment that operate primarily on the basis of electrical or electronic (not mechanical) principles.
Artisan

Great artisans are usually capable of:
- Using hands and arms in handling, installing, positioning, and moving materials.
- Performing precise and skillful manipulation of small objects.
- Being active and proactive in regards to physical activities that require considerable use of your arms and legs and moving your whole body, such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, and handling materials.
Other work activities related to Signal and track switch repairers
- Installing, inspecting, maintaining, and repairing various railroad service equipment on the road or in the shop, including railroad signaling systems.
- Inspecting and testing operation, mechanical parts, and circuitry of gate crossings, signals, and signaling equipment such as interlocks and hotbox detectors.
- Inspecting switch controlling mechanisms on trolley wires and in the tracks’ beds, using hand tools and testing equipment.
- Driving motor vehicles to job sites.
- Tightening loose bolts, using wrenches, and testing circuits and connections by opening and closing gates.
- Inspecting electrical units of railroad grade crossing gates and repairing loose bolts and defective electrical connections and parts.
- Replacing defective wiring, broken lenses, or burned out light bulbs.
- Recording and reporting information about mileage or tracks inspected, repairs performed, and equipment requiring replacement.
- Inspecting, maintaining, and replacing batteries as needed.
- Lubricating moving parts on gate crossing mechanisms and swinging signals.
