Great artisans are usually capable of:
- Using hands and arms in handling, installing, positioning, and moving materials.
- Performing precise and skillful manipulation of small objects.
- Being active and proactive in regards to physical activities that require considerable use of your arms and legs and moving your whole body, such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, and handling materials.
Controller

Controllers are expected to be good at:
- Using either control mechanisms or direct physical activity to operate manufacturing systems.
- Working with hand operated industrial machines and power tools.
- Adjusting knobs, levers, and physical or touch sensitive buttons in industrial devices.
- Running, maneuvering, navigating, or driving vehicles or mechanized equipment, such as forklifts, passenger vehicles, aircraft, or watercraft.
Other work activities related to Pipelayers
- Checking slopes for conformance to requirements, using levels or lasers.
- Covering pipes with earth or other materials.
- Connecting pipe pieces and sealing joints, using welding equipment, cement, or glues.
- Cutting pipes to required lengths.
- Installing or repairing sanitary or stormwater sewer structures or pipe systems.
- Grading or leveling trench bases, using tamping machines or hand tools.
- Laying out pipe routes, following written instructions or blueprints and coordinating layouts with supervisors.
- Aligning and positioning pipes to preparing them for welding or sealing.
- Digging trenches to desired or required depths, by hand or using trenching tools.
- Operating mechanized equipment, such as pickup trucks, rollers, tandem dumping trucks, front end loaders, or backhoes.
- Training or supervising others in laying pipe.
- Tapping and drilling holes into pipes for introducing auxiliary lines or devices.
- Locating existing pipes needing repairing or replacement, using magnetic or radio indicators.
