Inspectors should be great at:

  • Estimating sizes, distances, and quantities; or determining time, costs, resources, or materials needed to perform a work activity.
  • Observing, receiving, and otherwise obtaining information from all relevant sources.
  • Identifying information by categorizing, estimating, recognizing differences or similarities, and detecting changes in circumstances or events.
  • Inspecting equipment, structures, or materials to identify the cause of errors or other problems or defects.

Supervisor

Any supervisor should excel at:

  • Monitoring and reviewing information from materials, events, or the environment.
  • Detecting or assessing problems whether real or potential.
  • Monitoring and controlling resources and overseeing the spending of money.

Other work activities related to Subway and streetcar operators

  • Operating controls for opening and closing transit vehicle doors.
  • Driving and controlling rail guided public transportation, such as subways, elevated trains, and electric powered streetcars, trams, or trolleys, for transporting passengers.
  • Monitoring lights indicating obstructions or other trains ahead and watching for car and truck traffic at crossings, staying alert to potential hazards.
  • Directing emergency evacuation procedures.
  • Regulating vehicle speeds and the time spent at each stop for maintaining schedules.
  • Reporting delays, mechanical problems, and emergencies to supervisors or dispatchers, using radios.
  • Making announcements to passengers, such as notifications of upcoming stops or scheduling delays.
  • Completing reports, including shift summaries and incident or accident reports.
  • Greeting passengers, providing information, and answering questions concerning fares, schedules, transfers, and routings.
  • Attending meetings on driver and passenger safety to learning ways in which job performance might be affected.
