Archetype 11 Technician

Technicians will often be asked these tasks:

  • Providing documentation, detailed instructions, drawings, or specifications to tell others about how devices, parts, equipment, or structures are to be fabricated, constructed, assembled, modified, maintained, or used.
  • Using computers and computer systems (including hardware and software) to program, write software, set up functions, enter data, or process information.
  • Servicing, repairing, calibrating, regulating, fine-tuning, or testing machines, devices, and equipment that operate primarily on the basis of electrical or electronic (not mechanical) principles.

Artisan

Archetype 9 Artisan

Great artisans are usually capable of:

  • Using hands and arms in handling, installing, positioning, and moving materials.
  • Performing precise and skillful manipulation of small objects.
  • Being active and proactive in regards to physical activities that require considerable use of your arms and legs and moving your whole body, such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, and handling materials.

Other work activities related to Ship engineers

  • Monitoring the availability, usage, or conditions of lifesaving equipment or pollution preventatives for ensuring that international regulations are followed.
  • Monitoring engine, machinery, or equipment indicators when vessels are underway and reporting abnormalities to appropriate shipboard staff.
  • Maintaining electrical power, heating, ventilation, refrigeration, water, or sewerage systems.
  • Recording orders for changes in ship speed or direction and noting gauge readings or testing data, such as revolutions per minute or voltage output, in engineering logs.
  • Performing or participating in emergency drills, as required.
  • Maintaining thorough records of engineering department activities, including machine operations.
  • Starting engines to propel ships and regulating engines and power transmissions for controlling speeds of ships, according to directions from captains or bridge computers.
  • Monitoring and testing operations of engines or other equipment so that malfunctions and their causes can be identified.
