Inspectors should be great at:

  • Estimating sizes, distances, and quantities; or determining time, costs, resources, or materials needed to perform a work activity.
  • Observing, receiving, and otherwise obtaining information from all relevant sources.
  • Identifying information by categorizing, estimating, recognizing differences or similarities, and detecting changes in circumstances or events.
  • Inspecting equipment, structures, or materials to identify the cause of errors or other problems or defects.

Supervisor

Any supervisor should excel at:

  • Monitoring and reviewing information from materials, events, or the environment.
  • Detecting or assessing problems whether real or potential.
  • Monitoring and controlling resources and overseeing the spending of money.

Other work activities related to Water and wastewater treatment plant and system operators

  • Cleaning and maintaining tanks, filter beds, and other working areas, using hand tools and power tools.
  • Adding chemicals, such as ammonia, chlorine, or lime, for disinfecting and deodorize water and other liquids.
  • Operating and adjusting controls on equipment for purifying and clarifying water, processing or disposing sewage, and generating power.
  • Inspecting equipment or monitoring operating conditions, meters, and gauges for determining loading requirements and detecting malfunctions.
  • Collecting and testing water and sewage samples, using testing equipment and color analysis standards.
  • Recording operational data, personnel attendance, or meter and gauge readings on specified forms.
  • Maintaining, repairing, and lubricating equipment, using hand tools and power tools.
  • Directing and coordinating plants workers engaged in routine operations and maintenance activities.
